T-Mobile eSIM QR Code Not Working or Missing

A T-Mobile iPhone often activates without a QR code. Check for an assigned plan, EID update, Wi-Fi error, SIM Protection, or device lock first.

Quick answer

Before requesting another QR code, open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and look for T-Mobile New Cellular Plan or a carrier-plan notification. T-Mobile says a QR code is needed only when automatic discovery does not arrive. If the plan is missing, confirm that T-Mobile has the iPhone's EID, the phone is unlocked and online, and no SIM Protection or listed transfer error is blocking activation.

A missing T-Mobile QR code does not always mean activation is blocked. T-Mobile normally tries to deliver an assigned cellular plan automatically to an eligible iPhone. Its QR-code tutorial says a QR code is needed when that auto-discovery notification does not arrive.

First check whether the plan is already waiting in Settings. Repeatedly scanning a code cannot fix a line that is assigned to the wrong EID, blocked by SIM Protection, or locked to another carrier.

Check for the automatic T-Mobile plan

Connect the iPhone to working Wi-Fi, then open:

Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM

Look for:

  • T-Mobile New Cellular Plan
  • Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed
  • Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan
  • an existing T-Mobile line that is turned off

T-Mobile says the normal plan notification may not surface automatically when Settings already has multiple badge notifications. Opening Cellular settings directly can reveal T-Mobile New Cellular Plan.

If the T-Mobile line already appears:

  1. Tap the line.
  2. Turn on Turn On This Line.
  3. Finish any carrier setup notice.
  4. Wait for T-Mobile to replace SOS or No Service.

If a QR attempt says Plan cannot be added, check whether the plan was already installed. T-Mobile’s current troubleshooting says that when the QR setup succeeded but another assigned-plan notification appears afterward, the extra notification can be dismissed.

Confirm the activation prerequisites

T-Mobile lists these checks for an iPhone eSIM:

  1. The iPhone supports eSIM and has current software.
  2. A phone bought from another carrier is unlocked.
  3. Wi-Fi is connected and can reach the internet.
  4. For an iPhone-to-iPhone transfer, Bluetooth is on and the old phone has a passcode.
  5. T-Mobile has the correct device information for the line.

Open Settings > General > About and locate the EID and IMEI or IMEI2. If the phone came from another carrier, also check Carrier Lock. Apple says No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked; only the locking carrier can unlock it.

Do not post the EID or IMEI publicly. Give it only to T-Mobile through its authenticated app, website, store, or official support.

Find out whether T-Mobile has the correct EID

T-Mobile’s QR tutorial says the device EID must be provided so the account can be updated before a QR code is delivered by email. If the code opens but no eligible plan is found, ask T-Mobile to compare:

  • the phone number being activated
  • the iPhone model
  • IMEI or IMEI2
  • EID
  • postpaid, prepaid, business, or government account type

A code created for a different device assignment cannot correct the account. Have T-Mobile update the line first, then use the current delivery method it provides.

Use the QR code correctly

If T-Mobile confirms that automatic activation is unavailable and sends a QR code:

  1. Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM.
  3. Choose Use QR Code if it appears.
  4. Scan the code supplied by T-Mobile.
  5. Enter a confirmation code only if T-Mobile provided one.
  6. Follow the Add Cellular Plan prompts.

Apple also supports opening a carrier QR code that appears in the default Mail app or browser on the same iPhone. On iOS 17.4 or later, touch and hold the QR image, then choose Add eSIM when that option appears.

If T-Mobile says the QR code is no longer valid or tied to an earlier EID, ask for a current activation rather than using a code found online. Never scan a generic carrier QR code from a forum or image search.

Match the error to the right action

T-Mobile publishes different next steps for different activation errors:

  • 511, 514, 531, 534, or 538: the eSIM transfer failed. T-Mobile directs users to its manual transfer setup, then support if that fails.
  • 512, 515, 516, 532, 535, 536, 539, or 540: contact T-Mobile for help changing the eSIM and downloading the profile.
  • 513 or 533: T-Mobile identifies a Wi-Fi connection problem. Confirm that the Wi-Fi can open a webpage and try the supported activation again.
  • 519: T-Mobile says SIM Protection is blocking the activation. An authorized account user must remove or manage that protection before trying again.
  • Unable to Transfer Phone Number: use T-Mobile’s manual transfer path, then contact support if it still fails.
  • Prepaid error 501: T-Mobile says the iPhone is incompatible, lacks eSIM, or is locked by another provider.
  • Prepaid error 503: T-Mobile says the phone has reached its stored eSIM profile limit.

For a profile-limit error, do not delete the active line you currently rely on. Confirm which inactive profile is safe to remove and how the needed T-Mobile plan will be restored.

Separate eSIM transfer from number transfer

An eSIM can download while a phone number being moved from another carrier is still pending. Check T-Mobile’s number-transfer status separately when:

  • a temporary T-Mobile number appears
  • calls still reach the old carrier
  • outgoing calls show the wrong number
  • the old phone and new phone both have partial service
  • T-Mobile asks for corrected account or transfer-PIN information

Keep the old carrier account active until T-Mobile confirms the port is complete. If the new iPhone stays on SOS, use the new iPhone SOS after transfer guide to separate the eSIM, port, and coverage states.

Refresh and test after installation

After the T-Mobile line appears in Settings:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds.
  2. Turn it off.
  3. Restart the iPhone if T-Mobile does not appear.
  4. Open Settings > General > About and install a carrier settings update if offered.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off.
  6. Make and receive a call.
  7. Send and receive an SMS.
  8. Open a webpage over cellular data.

If calls work but data does not, follow the cellular data after switching carriers guide. Do not erase the iPhone or reset all settings while the carrier assignment is still in question.

What to give T-Mobile support

Contact T-Mobile from another working phone when possible. Have:

  • the T-Mobile number or temporary number
  • account type
  • iPhone model and iOS version
  • IMEI or IMEI2 and EID
  • exact error code
  • whether T-Mobile New Cellular Plan appears
  • whether another carrier is shown under Carrier Lock
  • whether this is a device change, new line, or number port

Ask the representative:

  1. Is this line assigned to the displayed EID?
  2. Is an eSIM profile ready for automatic download?
  3. Is SIM Protection or another account restriction blocking it?
  4. Is the iPhone compatible and unlocked?
  5. Should this account use automatic activation, manual transfer, a carrier app, or a QR code?

That avoids treating every eSIM failure as a camera or QR-scanning problem.

Frequently asked questions

Do all T-Mobile iPhones need an eSIM QR code?

No. T-Mobile supports automatic carrier-plan delivery and iPhone-to-iPhone transfer. Its QR tutorial says a QR code is needed when the auto-discovery notification does not arrive.

Where is T-Mobile New Cellular Plan?

Open Settings, tap Cellular, then Add eSIM. T-Mobile says the plan can be available there even when the automatic notification was not shown.

What does Plan cannot be added mean?

First check whether the T-Mobile plan is already installed. T-Mobile says an extra assigned-plan notification can be dismissed when the QR setup has already added the plan. Otherwise, keep the exact error and contact T-Mobile.

Can I reuse a QR code from another phone?

Do not assume it applies. T-Mobile ties activation to the account and device EID. Ask T-Mobile to verify the assignment and provide the supported method for the current phone.

Should I delete every old eSIM to make room?

No. For a profile-limit error, identify inactive profiles carefully and protect the working line. Confirm the replacement path before removing any eSIM you may still need.
