Cellular Data Not Working After Switching Carriers

Calls may work while mobile data fails after a carrier switch. Separate activation, default-SIM, plan, APN, and phone-setting problems in this order.

Quick answer

Turn off Wi-Fi and test a call, an SMS, and a webpage. If calls and texts work but the webpage does not, confirm that Cellular Data is on, the new carrier line is selected as the data SIM, and the carrier added a compatible data plan. Install any carrier-settings update. Change an APN only when the carrier gives you the exact values.

When cellular data stops after a carrier switch, first find out whether the whole line failed or only its data service failed. A phone can have enough activation to make calls while the data plan, default SIM, or network settings are still wrong.

Do not start by copying an APN from a forum. Apple warns that an incorrect APN can remove data access and may cause additional charges. Use only the settings provided for your exact carrier and plan.

Separate a line problem from a data-only problem

Connect to Wi-Fi long enough to save these instructions, then turn Wi-Fi off. Run four tests:

  1. Look for the new carrier’s name and signal indicator.
  2. Make an ordinary outgoing call.
  3. Send a regular SMS text, not only an iMessage or RCS message.
  4. Open a new webpage in a browser.

The combination points to the next step:

  • No carrier name, SOS, or No Service: finish SIM or eSIM activation first. Use our new iPhone SOS transfer checklist if that matches your situation.
  • Calls and SMS work, but no webpage opens: focus on the selected data line, plan provisioning, carrier settings, and APN.
  • Only one app fails: check that app’s cellular permission, VPN, or account instead of changing the carrier setup.
  • Data works only in another location: check coverage, an outage, or roaming before resetting the phone.

This test matters because an account or activation problem cannot be fixed by changing browser or app settings.

Make sure the new line is the data line

Dual-SIM phones can keep the old carrier line installed after the new one is added. Calls may use one line while cellular data is still assigned to the other.

On iPhone:

  1. Open Settings > Cellular.
  2. Make sure Cellular Data is on.
  3. Tap Cellular Data and select the new carrier line.
  4. Tap the new line and confirm Turn On This Line is enabled.
  5. Scroll to the affected app and make sure cellular access is allowed.

On Pixel and many other Android phones:

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. Select the new carrier.
  3. Turn on Use SIM and Mobile data.
  4. If more than one SIM is present, choose the new line as the default for mobile data.

Samsung and other Android menu names vary. Search Settings for SIM manager, Mobile networks, or Mobile data if those labels are different.

After selecting the correct line, keep Wi-Fi off and open a fresh webpage. A cached app screen does not prove that cellular data is working.

Confirm activation and plan provisioning

If calls work but all cellular data fails, sign in to the new carrier over Wi-Fi and check:

  • the number transfer is complete
  • the correct phone or IMEI is attached to the line
  • the SIM or eSIM is active
  • the plan includes smartphone data
  • the account is not suspended, blocked, or out of prepaid data
  • there is no local outage

An active-looking signal indicator does not confirm every data feature was provisioned. AT&T’s current SIM-swap guidance, for example, tells customers to check for a compatible data plan when a SIM moves from a basic phone to a smartphone.

If the carrier switch is still pending, correct the number-transfer information before changing phone settings. Keep the old carrier account open until the new carrier confirms completion.

Refresh the carrier connection

After the account and plan look correct, try the reversible connection steps:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode off and wait for the carrier name.
  3. Restart the phone.
  4. Test with Wi-Fi off.

On iPhone, connect to Wi-Fi and open Settings > General > About. Install a carrier settings update if one appears. A new SIM can require settings from the new carrier.

On Pixel, Google also recommends checking that Airplane Mode is off, the new SIM is enabled, and the phone has current system updates. If a SIM error appears, use the carrier’s activation path rather than repeatedly restarting.

Check roaming only when it applies

Do not turn on Data Roaming automatically just because data is unavailable. Roaming can create charges depending on the plan.

It is relevant when:

  • you are outside the new carrier’s native coverage area
  • you are traveling internationally
  • the carrier or MVNO explicitly says domestic roaming is required for the current location

Check the plan first, then follow the carrier’s roaming instructions. If you are in the carrier’s normal home coverage area, leave roaming out of the first diagnosis.

Handle APN settings safely

The Access Point Name tells the phone how to reach the carrier’s cellular data network. Many US carriers configure it automatically, and some iPhones do not show an editable APN menu at all.

Use this rule:

  • No APN menu: contact the carrier. Do not install an unofficial configuration profile.
  • APN menu is visible: compare it only with the carrier’s official settings for the exact service or MVNO.
  • The carrier tells you to reset the APN: on iPhone, the available path is generally Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network > Reset Settings.
  • The carrier gives new values: enter them exactly, including capitalization and punctuation, and save them as instructed.

Apple says an iOS update resets manually entered APN values unless a configuration profile supplies them. If data stopped after both a carrier switch and an iOS update, ask whether the required APN must be entered again.

For T-Mobile-branded iPhone service, T-Mobile’s current device guide says APN and data settings are configured automatically. That makes account provisioning, line selection, and activation more useful checks than guessing an APN.

Reset mobile network settings only after carrier checks

A network-settings reset can remove stale network configuration, but it cannot finish a number port or add a missing data plan.

Before resetting, note that:

  • iPhone Reset Network Settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, preferred networks, VPN settings, and APN settings.
  • Pixel provides a narrower Reset Mobile Network Settings option, separate from its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi reset.
  • Android paths vary by manufacturer.

If the carrier confirms activation, plan, compatibility, and APN are correct, then follow the phone manufacturer’s current reset instructions. Reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward and test cellular data again with Wi-Fi turned off.

Do not factory-reset the phone for a data-only provisioning problem.

What to ask the new carrier

If calls work but data still does not, contact the new carrier and say exactly that. Ask the representative to confirm:

  1. Is the number transfer fully complete?
  2. Is the SIM or eSIM active on the correct IMEI?
  3. Does the line have the correct smartphone data feature?
  4. Is the device model certified or compatible with this network?
  5. What APN should this exact plan use, if manual APN entry is supported?
  6. Does the line need to be reprovisioned?

Have the phone number, account or case number, device model, IMEI, SIM type, locations tested, and the results of the call/SMS/webpage test ready. Share device identifiers only through the carrier’s official support channel.

Frequently asked questions

Why do calls work but cellular data does not?

Voice and data are separate carrier features. The line may be active for calls while the data plan, default data SIM, APN, or device provisioning is still wrong.

Should I change the APN after switching carriers?

Only if the new carrier says the APN is wrong and gives you the exact settings. Apple warns that incorrect APN values can break data connectivity and may cause additional charges.

Why does data work on Wi-Fi but not on the mobile network?

Wi-Fi bypasses the carrier’s mobile-data path. Turn Wi-Fi off when testing so you can tell whether the SIM, plan, and cellular network actually provide internet access.

Will Reset Network Settings fix a pending number transfer?

No. A phone reset cannot approve or complete a carrier port. Check transfer and activation status with the new carrier first.

Should I cancel the old carrier account?

Not before the new carrier confirms that the phone-number transfer is complete. Canceling early can interrupt or reject the transfer.
