Google Pixel Mobile Data Not Working

Separate a Pixel data-only problem from no service, choose the correct SIM, check 5G/LTE and the carrier, then reset only mobile settings if needed.

Quick answer

Turn Wi-Fi off and test a call, SMS, and webpage. If calls work, confirm Mobile data is on and the correct SIM is selected for data. Restart the Pixel, use a compatible preferred network type, and check the plan and outage. Reset Mobile Network Settings only after the carrier confirms provisioning.

When mobile data fails on a Pixel, test whether the phone has lost the entire carrier line or only internet access. That distinction tells you whether to work on activation or data settings.

Run a call, SMS, and webpage test

Turn Wi-Fi off, then:

  1. check the carrier name and signal icon
  2. make an ordinary call
  3. send a plain SMS
  4. open a new webpage
  • No carrier, calls, or SMS: check SIM/eSIM activation, account status, coverage, and device compatibility.
  • Calls and SMS work, but the webpage fails: check Mobile data, the selected data SIM, plan provisioning, VPN, and APN.
  • One app fails: inspect that app’s data permission or VPN instead of resetting the carrier connection.
  • Data fails only in one place: check the carrier’s coverage or outage.

Turn on the correct SIM for data

Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Select the carrier and confirm Use SIM and Mobile data are on.

With two SIMs, verify which line is selected for mobile data. A Pixel can use one line for calls and another for data, so working calls do not prove the right data line is selected. Temporarily turn the unused SIM off if the assignment is unclear, then retest.

Data Saver limits background use but should not normally block a webpage you open. Still, review Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver if only background notifications fail.

Refresh the radio connection

  1. Make sure Airplane Mode is off.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for 15 seconds, then off.
  3. Power the Pixel completely off for about 30 seconds.
  4. Turn it on and test with Wi-Fi still off.

Google recommends a full power-off during mobile-connectivity troubleshooting. Install current Android system updates over Wi-Fi afterward.

Check preferred network type and coverage

Under the SIM settings, use the carrier-supported Preferred network type. If 5G is unstable at one location, a temporary LTE test can show whether the problem is 5G coverage rather than the account. Restore the carrier’s normal recommended setting after testing.

Do not assume every Pixel variant supports every US carrier band or feature. Google publishes carrier-compatibility guidance, and carrier-sold models can have unlock restrictions. This is especially important for an imported phone, a recently switched carrier, or an eSIM-only model.

Confirm the plan and provisioning

In the carrier’s official account app or site, verify:

  • the line and data plan are active
  • high-speed or prepaid data has not been exhausted
  • the SIM/eSIM is attached to the Pixel’s correct IMEI
  • the number port is complete
  • no outage affects the location
  • roaming is allowed if you are outside native coverage

Do not turn on roaming without checking possible charges. If this began after a carrier switch, use the fuller carrier-switch mobile data guide.

Leave APN and reset steps until later

Many carriers install APN settings automatically. Change them only when the carrier gives values for your exact plan.

If the carrier confirms the line, plan, compatibility, and APN:

  1. Open Settings > System > Reset options.
  2. Choose Reset Mobile Network Settings.
  3. Review which SIM will be reset.
  4. Reset, restart, and retest.

Pixel provides this separately from Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on current versions, but labels can vary. A factory reset is not an appropriate first fix for a carrier outage or provisioning error.

Frequently asked questions

Why do calls work but mobile data does not?

Voice and data are separately configured. The data SIM, plan feature, APN, or carrier provisioning can be wrong while calls still work.

Should I force LTE instead of 5G?

Use LTE as a temporary coverage test when 5G is unstable. Restore the carrier’s recommended automatic setting after you identify the cause.

Will resetting mobile settings erase my photos?

No. It resets cellular configuration, not personal photos. Read the on-screen confirmation because options and affected settings vary by Android version.

Why does the Pixel work on Wi-Fi only?

Wi-Fi bypasses the carrier data connection. Test with Wi-Fi off to verify the SIM, data plan, and mobile network directly.

When should I contact the carrier?

Contact it when activation, an outage, plan status, SIM/IMEI pairing, carrier compatibility, or APN values are in question—or when the mobile reset does not restore a confirmed active line.
