Raise Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and Alerts, then open the alarm and make sure its Sound is not set to None. Silent mode and Do Not Disturb do not mute an iPhone alarm. If all alerts become quieter while you look at a Face ID iPhone, test Attention Aware separately.
If an iPhone alarm is too quiet, do not use Control Center as your first fix. The volume slider there usually controls music, video, or call audio. Clock alarms use the Ringtone and Alerts level.
Set the volume that alarms actually use
- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics.
- Under Ringtone and Alerts, drag the slider to the right.
- Listen to the preview and choose a level that will wake you.
- If you want the side buttons to control this level, turn on Change with Buttons.
Leaving Change with Buttons off can prevent an accidental side-button press from lowering tomorrow’s alarm. It also means the buttons will not raise the alarm volume unless you return to Settings.
Check the sound on the specific alarm
Open Clock > Alarms, tap the alarm, and select Sound. Make sure it is not set to None, then choose a clearly audible tone. Save the alarm after the change.
Create a test alarm for two minutes from now and lock the phone. A successful test is more useful than assuming the preview volume will behave the same overnight.
If only one alarm is quiet, compare that alarm’s Sound setting with an alarm that works. If every alarm is quiet, focus on Ringtone and Alerts, the speaker, or system-wide alert behavior.
Silent mode and Focus are not the alarm-volume controls
Apple states that Silent mode, the Ring/Silent switch, and Do Not Disturb do not stop an alarm from sounding. Turning those features off may help with other notifications, but it is not the normal fix for a quiet Clock alarm.
Headphones do not make the built-in speaker irrelevant either. Apple says an alarm plays at the set volume through the iPhone’s built-in speakers as well as connected wired or wireless headphones.
Test Attention Aware only when other alerts also get quieter
On Face ID models, Attention Aware features can lower the volume of some alerts when the phone detects that you are looking at it. Apple does not describe this as the main alarm-volume control, so do not start here.
If ringtones and alerts also become quieter as you look at the screen, test:
- Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Note the current state of Attention Aware Features.
- Turn it off temporarily.
- Run another short alarm test.
Restore the setting if it makes no difference. Disabling it changes other attention-aware behavior and is not necessary for most alarm problems.
Check the speaker without erasing the phone
Play a ringtone preview and ordinary audio through the built-in speaker. Remove a case that blocks the speaker opening and gently clear visible debris without inserting liquid or sharp objects.
Then restart the iPhone and install any available iOS update. If music, ringtones, and speakerphone are all abnormally quiet or distorted at maximum volume, the issue is wider than the Clock app. Contact Apple for speaker diagnostics rather than factory-resetting the phone.
Make a safer wake-up test
For an important morning:
- set a test alarm while you are still awake
- keep the iPhone connected to power
- place it on a stable surface with the speaker unobstructed
- use a second alarm device until the iPhone passes repeated tests
Do not rely on changing five settings at once. Change one item, run a two-minute test, and keep the change only if it solves the problem.
Frequently asked questions
Does the iPhone media volume control alarm volume?
No. Clock alarm loudness follows Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and Alerts, not the normal media slider in Control Center.
Will an alarm sound when the iPhone is on silent?
Yes. Apple says Silent mode and Do Not Disturb do not prevent a Clock alarm from sounding.
Why is just one alarm silent?
Open that alarm and check Sound. It may be set to None or to a quieter tone than your other alarms.
Can the volume buttons lower tomorrow’s alarm?
They can when Change with Buttons is enabled. Turn that option off if you want to lock the Ringtone and Alerts level against accidental button presses.
Should I factory-reset an iPhone for a quiet alarm?
No. Verify the alert slider, alarm sound, and speaker first. If all speaker audio remains weak or distorted, seek hardware support before erasing data.
