Connect a phone to the same Wi-Fi and open a new webpage.
- Both fail: check the ISP, modem, and router.
- Phone works but Fire TV fails: run Fire TV diagnostics, restart, and reconnect.
- Only one streaming app fails: troubleshoot that app or account.
- Fire TV works on a phone hotspot: the home router path or compatibility is the likely cause.
Keep cellular data costs in mind when testing a hotspot.
Run Network Diagnostics
From an Unable to Connect message, choose Network Diagnostics when offered. You can also open Settings > Network, highlight the current network, and use the on-screen status or diagnostic option available on your Fire OS version.
Record whether the failure is Wi-Fi signal, router connection, or internet access. That result is more useful than changing DNS or security settings at random.
Restart in a controlled order
- Restart the modem/router and wait until other devices have internet.
- Restart Fire TV from Settings > My Fire TV > Restart, or unplug its power briefly and reconnect it.
- Test again after Fire TV finishes booting.
Use the supplied Fire TV power adapter and cable when possible. Power from a TV USB port can be insufficient or shut off with the television, causing unstable behavior that resembles a network problem.
Forget and rejoin the network
Open Settings > Network, highlight your Wi-Fi network, press the menu button shown on screen to forget it, then select the network and enter the password again.
Verify you are joining the intended home network rather than a guest or similarly named network. If the signal is weak, move the router or Fire TV, reduce obstructions behind the television, or test another supported band. 2.4 GHz generally offers longer range; 5 GHz can work better at shorter range.
Check time, updates, and captive networks
An incorrect date/time or incomplete Fire OS update can interfere with secure connections. Once online, check Settings > My Fire TV > About > Check for Updates.
Hotel and public Wi-Fi can require a web sign-in page. Follow Fire TV’s supported captive-portal prompts. A home guest network with device isolation can also prevent casting or local control even if internet streaming works.
Use factory reset only as a final device step
Do not factory-reset for a posted ISP outage, a router that fails on every device, or weak signal. A factory reset removes account registration, apps, and settings.
